Serves Indian and Oriental grills
Here’s a prime example of a mismatch between a grandiose name and the restaurant itself.
On the face of it, it’s quite a good deal, especially if you have a large appetite: unlimited appetizers, a buffet of main courses and desserts with free mocktails thrown in. But in practice, it turns out to be a bit of a tight-rope walk. Some of the dishes work, most don’t. So here’s a piece of advice: go very slow on the first round, and once you discover what you like, take second and third helpings of it. Do be warned that the service style incorporates a fair amount of bowing, scraping and ingratiating into the system. From the time you order seconds of a kebab to the time it is served, there’s a (rather irritating) time lapse. The kebabs are served in a large platter and the sight of a single kebab on a vast tray does not inspire confidence. The most pleasant seating is in the private dining space that faces the windows, but the staff tends to chill out there, making guests sit in the main dining area. There’s a live band in the evenings. The mind boggles at the permutation of all that bowing and scraping with live music!
There is a cyclic menu in place that changes every Tuesday. I thought the salsa potato was sensational: the humble baby potato was grilled crisp and lathered over with a garlic mayonnaise: no trace of salsa here. All the kebabs and grills are desi, by the way, so the “grills of the world” is a misnomer. The ‘Brazilian’ pineapple was great too. None of the non-vegetarian kebabs were of the same standard, so if you have a vegetarian aunt, this is a good bet!
In the mains at the counter, the lal maas is outstanding. It had a dhungar of cloves in it, which considering the level of the restaurant, was certainly very impressive. Everything else is ordinary and the salads disappoint. Ditto, unfortunately for the desserts, though the so-called lemon tart was light and flavourful, the halwa had an overpowering, synthetic perfume.
Plus and minus: From the nightmarish parking downstairs where the route is not marked clearly to the rather unsatisfactory method of serving the grills, Legends Grile fails to live up to its name.
